Lonnie Golightly III is issuing the Katherine M. Adams Scholarship in honor of his Mother to senior high school students in the Tuscaloosa City & County school systems to help with their educational dreams. This scholarship will be open beginning September 1 through May 31.
Katherine M. Adams was born in Carrollton, Alabama. Katherine spent her childhood in Queens, New York before returning to Carrolton, Alabama to complete her high school diploma. While attending Carrollton High School, Katherine became the first ever African American homecoming queen & later graduated in 1973.
Upon graduating high school, Katherine attended the Mississippi College for Women in Columbus, Mississippi. In college, Katherine was a Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society member & graduated from the Mississippi College for Women in 1977 with a degree in Secretarial Studies. Katherine was the first in her family to ever graduate college. Next, Katherine enrolled at the University of Alabama to pursue her Master's degree and graduated with her Masters in Business Education in 1982.
After completing her Master’s degree, Katherine began her career as an educator at Brookwood High School teaching English. Katherine later accepted employment at Central High School. While in the Tuscaloosa City School system, Katherine held various positions including: Assistant Principal, Summer School Principal, Co-op coordinator, & department chairwoman. In 2001, while at Central High School, she received the prestigious Milken National Education award. Katherine finished her career at Northridge High School.
Katherine was: faithful servant of God, constantly helping others, & giving back to the community.
